Green Baby/Toddler Event #5; Little Green Books

by admin

It’s never to early to encourage reading among kids, in fact the earlier you start the better! I began reading books with my babies before they were even born and still to this day we read a book before bed. Reading is not only educational but its a great way to create memories of books early on.

I like to read all kinds of stories to my kids, but do prefer the books that teach a lesson or promote a good activity. While princess books and monster books are great, I tend to lean on books that are fun but also a learning experience.

little_greenlogo-1606339I was recently sent some really fun books from Simon & Schuster called Little Green Books. Little Green Books is a new eco-friendly series from Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing Division. The books are designed to plant the seeds of earth-friendly living with fun characters, illustrations and great stories. Little Green Books cover a variety of subjects, teaching children about the dangers of global warming, the benefits of recycling, what they can do to help endangered animals, and much more. The best part about these adorable books are they are eco-friendly! Made of recycled materials, printed with vegetable or soy based inks, made with FSC certified paper and are totally recyclable.

I was sent a copy of My First Garden, Easy to Be Green activity book, Don’t Throw That Away!, What Do You See?: A Lift-the-Flap Book About Endangered Animals, SpongeBob Goes Green!, Little Monkey, and Dora the Explorer: Dora Celebrates Earth Day! for review. When they arrived, I was immediately impressed. I had pictured them as being small but they are not. These books are really nice and do not cost any more than books found at a local store with the added bonus they re made from recycled materials!

Little Green Books and The Big Green Help (Nickelodeon) have teamed up to bring you books from your favorite Nickelodeon characters. Each book is about ways to save the earth, using popular characters that kids recognize. Dora, Wonder Pets, SpongeBob, Diego, and Blue’s Clues all adorn the covers and each have their own “green” story to share. My kids have enjoyed all of the books, especially the Dora Celebrates Earth Day and SpongeBob Goes Green.

Out of the books we reviewed, three have been my favorites…..

little-green-books-4-1640965What Do You See?: A Lift-the-Flap Book About Endangered Animals is another hardcover book that is really engaging for kids. Stephen Krensky’s clever rhyming text entices young readers to guess which endangered species is hiding beneath each flap! In this title, a young girl peers through a pair of binoculars. What does she see? Each spread features text and die cuts which hint at the animal’s identity, until finally it is revealed by lifting the flap! A black and white panda munching on bamboo shoots, a monarch butterfly, blue rhinoceros, sea turtle, and snow leopard—all of whom are endangered species.

Not only is this book interactive it also encourage thinking skills, and teaches about wildlife that is so precious to the planet. This book has been the favorite among my 6 and 4 year old girls because they are both nature and animals lovers.

first-garden-book-1450902My First Garden is a hardcover book in the shape of a basket that tells the story of a little girl and her mom planing a garden. The story teaches gardening, color and encourages great convo with kids about veggies! Plus it has a die cut handle making it easy for little ones to tote it around!

My 4 year old has really enjoyed this book a lot! We have red it countless times and she even likes to flip the pages and view the illustrations alone. My 9 month old has also enjoyed the book. While he does want to chew on it (apparently it feels good on hims gums or tastes really good) his eyes wander the pages as we read it every time.

little-monkey-green-book2-8071150The Little Money book is safe for all ages, perffect for the little ones, and a great book to start learning about green living! The book is made from 50% recycled material with soft recycled Polartec fleece. The fabric is machine-washable and the cover is embroidered with a whimiscal monkey face. The inside pages feature the cartoonish monkey and his buddy the panda. Packaged in a chipboard box made from 100% recycled material.

This is truly a great 1st book for a baby! My 9 month old has enjoyed this soft book. Most books for babies have just a few words per page, but this book actually has a nice story that is long enough to make sense yet short ednough to keep an older baby or toddler entertained.
